They know nothing of time, these angels watching, always watching, listening to human thoughts, moving through time effortlessly, but one angel, Cassiel, wants to become involved, to know what it’s like to be human. His wish comes true; now he is a foreigner in a strange land with perils he has no idea how to negotiate, and always he is hunted by Emit Flesti played by Willem Dafoe. Far Away So Close, directed, produced and written by Wim Wenders, is a deeply engaging film, an unusual film, a must see!
In his black and white world above, Cassiel listens to Gorbachev and Lou Reed (playing themselves). In his full color world below as a human, everything is fresh and new; even rain is a new experience and so too is alcohol. Poor, Cassiel, before he knows it, he’s addicted to the stuff. How very human of him. Far Away So Close is an awesome film. I recommend watching it without seeing the one that comes before.
